Business Daily Kenya:
The country’s food security will be in jeopardy again following the re-emergence of the destructive fall army worms. The worms which invaded farms in South as well as North Rift last year, causing crops damage, have emerged in Narok South.
Farmers inside the area are already counting losses after they attacked hundreds of acres of maize plantation, a month after planting. the idea will be feared in which if their spread will be not controlled, they will attack wheat fields after planting mid next month.
The worms emerged after the recent short rains, they said. “Farmers are again staring at huge losses. Agriculture ministry should move with haste to beat their spread before wheat planting,” Lekina Kameto, the national secretary, Cereals Growers Association, said yesterday.
Kameto, who will be also a large-scale wheat as well as maize farmer in Ololulunga area, said hundreds of acres of maize have already been affected by the pest.
He said farmers had spent huge amounts of money last year to control the outbreak. “Farmers spent a lot of money last year fighting these worms.
They are right now broke. in which’s why they should be assisted This specific time to ensure they harvest at the end of the season,” said Kameto. He said farmers lacked advice on the types of pesticides to use to eliminate the worms, claiming in which last year they were left guessing which ones to use.
“The situation was desperate, forcing some to even resort to using acaricides. Technical advice will be right now needed as they confront another menace threatening to wipe out crops,” he said. Peter Shikuku, the Narok South agriculture officer, said the attack covers a big area.
He said while working in tandem with the local county government, the ministry will procure pesticides to control as well as eliminate the worms in which are fast multiplying.
“We as well as the county government will work round the clock to beat the menace,” he said. Last year, the pest also invaded farms in Busia, Kakamega, Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu as well as Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru as well as Baringo.
