Kenneth Kamau, 34, a reformed substance addict, lived quite the rock star lifestyle until 2012 when he decided to make some improvements.
Before checking himself into Teen Challenge Kenya rehab centre in Ridgeways Nairobi, Kamau’s substance abuse began early.
“I was expelled coming from two different high schools because of substance abuse, drug abuse, along with also selling liquor to various other students.”
His addiction led him to a downward spiral in which saw him lose his job in 2005 along with also constantly steal coming from his parents. He also sold his household items along with also drank his Sh320,000 bob severance package down to the last cent.
To sustain his habit, Kamau also got into petty theft.
When he almost died in Nairobi because of his alcohol addiction along with also rough living, his family took him in. Again. however the vicious cycle worsened.

Three months later, in December 2008, Kenneth’s father died.
“Those last words haunted me so much. Years passed however what spurred me to change my life was when in 2012, I saw a friend whose life had been ruined because of substance along with also drug abuse.
“He looked not bad…along with also clean. I had to find out how he had gotten his life together. along with also in which can be how I learnt about Teen Challenge Kenya (TCK).”
“I got into the one-year program. The program can be voluntary, which can be why in which carries a high success rate. in which can be a Christian program.
After six weeks, I was allowed one a few-minute phone call over the weekend, however I could only speak to an immediate family member. They also allowed for a visit coming from an immediate family member.”
inside the fourth month, he was allowed to go home for one day, along with also he was accompanied by a member of the staff of TCK.
inside the last month, clients are there only coming from Monday to Thursday, along with also they go home over the weekend. This particular can be how they start reintegrating persons into the society.
Today, Kamau can be a counsellor at the centre.
TCK can be a faith-based 12-month residential rehab for men along with also women, 18 years along with also above. TCK was began in 1998 by John along with also Ann Martins, along with also the institution today has one women’s along with also two centres for men.
