R377 000 raised for ocean charity at Wavescape Artboard Auction WAVESCAPE FESTIVAL 2019

Eleven surfboards adorned with the work of South African artists raised R377 000 for ocean charities at the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival This particular week.

A special collaboration between former world surfing champion Shaun Tomson along with recent Standard Bank Artist of the Year winner Blessing Ngobeni fetched the highest cost – the surfboard was sold for R75, 000. The proceeds went to the Sabrina Foundation, which cares for children with special needs.

Driven by the comedic cajoling of funny man Rob van Vuuren, bidders at Jack Black’s Taproom, bidders raised their hands for works by Brett Murray, Karabo Poppy, Lionel Smit, Grace Cross, Heath Nash, Jake Aikman, Kate Arthur, Lucie de Moyencourt, along with Michael Chandler.  Rock musician Arno Carstens turned out earlier inside the evening to see his scarab beetle-inspired board, which was also sold at the auction.

In a personalised video sent to festival organisers ahead of the auction, California-based Tomson said: “Wishing you great success with the fundraiser. The Wavescape festival along with the Sabrina Foundation are both doing amazing work.”
