The Pharmacy in addition to Poisons Board has named two common drugs among those which will no longer be sold without proper prescription via a medical practitioner.
The board has warned which codeine, the active ingredient from the drugs, is usually a controlled substance which can no longer be sold over the counter for risk of abuse in addition to addiction.
Pure codeine is usually mostly prescribed as a painkiller. In Kenya, the idea’s available in Benylin cough syrup in addition to Betapyn tablets, the latter a pain killer headaches, toothaches in addition to joint pains.
These drugs are commonly sold over-the-counter without prescriptions.
The poisons board has also given manufacturers of codeine-based medicines six months to change their packages to include clear in addition to prominently positioned warnings on the label.
RISK OF ADDICTION
The fresh packages will also include a summary of product characteristics in addition to patient information leaflet about the risk of addiction in addition to the importance of not taking the medicines for longer than three days.
Medicines with codeine have been switched via the Pharmacy Only Medicines (P) category to the Prescription Only Medicine (POM) catogory.
“All prescribers in addition to dispensers should not offer for sale any medicine which contains codeine without a valid prescription via a duly registered medical practitioner,” said the board’s registrar Dr Fred Siyoi.
Valid prescriptions should have patient’s name, address in addition to age, medical practitioner’s name, address, in addition to their registration number in addition to name of medicine.

“Please note which, no refill will be allowed for prescriptions with medicines which contain codeine,” added Dr Siyoi.
